Do All Appliances In The Kitchen Have To Match?

The constant innovation and upgrading of home appliances can make kitchen upkeep a mind-boggling task. From renovations to complete overhauls, the biggest question plaguing appliance shoppers is this: do all appliances in the kitchen have to match? The short answer is no. However, that answer comes with a handful of do’s and don’ts to make sure your kitchen looks tastefully planned and designed.

Do consider colour carefully. Remember the 1970s? If you weren’t there in person, look back at the pictures. The trend was matching avocado coloured sink, refrigerator, and oven. While it looked great three decades ago, designers today tend to use colour much more sparingly. If you are pining for a splash of colour in your kitchen, pick one appliance to go bold and keep the rest neutral. A red oven or stovetop can be delightfully eye-catching, but if paired with a red microwave will quickly turn garish. If you do choose a strong colour, make sure the rest of your appliances match or are at least in the same family.

Do not be afraid to mix stainless steel with wood. Many shoppers find stainless steel cold or intimidating, and fall into the “all white or black” appliance trap. Even if your kitchen is done in neutral woods or light colors, a stainless steel refrigerator can still fit in. The beauty of stainless steel is that it is durable, much easier to clean than painted metal or plastic, and reflects the tones of whatever colours are already in your kitchen.

Do make a list of features you want. There are virtually endless models and options available for each type of appliance. Making a list ahead of time will make your job and a sales representative’s job much easier. If you are buying all new appliances, a matching set can be very appealing. However, a list will also ensure you don’t end up with matching appliances that don’t meet your needs. Know which features are optional and which are deal breakers. If you know you need a convection option for your oven, you won’t be talked into a good-looking set without that feature.

Do not ever sacrifice quality. No matter how pretty that pearly-white refrigerator is now, there is a reason it is 90% off. Be wary of extreme deals or markdowns and research reviews carefully before buying. Even if a colour or stain seems perfect visually, make sure the product is well made or you will just end up replacing it next year. This is particularly important if you are only shopping for a single appliance. It is easy to find an appliance that looks like it matches your existing set and buy it without considering better options.

Do ask about custom options. Many companies offer an array of finishing options that might not be on display at the retailer. If you find a well-made appliance with features you like, check with the salesperson or even the company to see what colours or finishes are available.

Overall, remember that matching appliances are certainly nice but not essential. Far more important are the features of each appliances and the quality of the product.
